Who is a franchisee? What do they do and how do you become one?
The franchise market in Poland is growing rapidly, attracting more and more people looking to run their own business. This business model is often associated with the opportunity to combine the independence typical of entrepreneurship with a sense of security. In this context, the term ‘franchisee’ comes up frequently – often seen as a bridge between entrepreneurship and traditional employment.
But what does that actually look like in practice? Who exactly is a franchisee, what does the role involve, and how much can they earn? In this article, we cover the key aspects of how a franchisee operates within the franchise model.
Franchisee – what does it mean?
In simple terms, a franchisee is a person who runs their own business based on know-how provided by another entity – the franchisor. This means the entrepreneur operates using a ready-made business concept, a proven operating system, established brand recognition, and the operational support provided by the franchisor’s head office.
This form of business partnership is very common across many industries. In Poland, it is most strongly associated with food service and retail, though it is becoming increasingly popular in other sectors such as fitness. Thanks to the network’s expertise, a franchisee doesn’t need to test different approaches or build brand awareness from scratch. They work with a business model that has already been tested, refined, and implemented many times over.
Importantly, a franchisee is an entrepreneur who operates independently – not an employee. As a result, they bear the business risk, build relationships with their team, and are accountable for the results they achieve. How much a franchisee earns depends directly on how well they manage their business. Franchising is not a passive investment where you sign a contract, invest capital, and wait for returns. It requires genuine commitment from the business owner. (learn more about this business model).
How much does a franchisee earn?
There is no simple answer to how much a franchisee can earn. Earnings depend on several factors, including the industry they operate in, where their outlet is based, the size of the initial investment, and their ability to manage the business effectively.

Is a franchisee a business owner?
Yes, a franchisee is an independent business owner. They run their own company – either alone or with a partner or partners. They make operational decisions (within the guidelines set by the franchise network), manage their team, and ensure that customer service standards are consistently upheld. The head office supports them by monitoring the performance of each location, providing the tools needed for day-to-day operations, and enabling data analysis.
Franchisees within the Xtreme Fitness Gyms and Xtreme Brands networks have access to dedicated Franchise Managers who support them from the very early stages of their journey – from preparing for the opening of their location through to ongoing operations. Head office staff identify the right location, negotiate lease terms for the franchisee, and oversee the fit-out and equipping of the space. They also provide pre-sales support to help the location generate revenue from day one, as well as ongoing marketing assistance throughout the entire period of operation.
Agent vs. franchisee – what’s the difference?
The terms ‘agent’ and ‘franchisee’ are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to two quite different business models. Simply put – a franchisee becomes the owner of a given location. An agent, on the other hand, manages someone else’s operation and leases it from the owner.
An agent works with a company under an agency agreement, acting as an intermediary who sells the company’s goods or services. They have limited decision-making authority and little influence over the shape of the business. A franchisee, by contrast, operates according to the network’s rules but enjoys greater autonomy in running their business. That greater freedom, however, typically comes with a higher upfront investment, financial risk, and greater personal responsibility.
Who can become a franchisee?
In theory, anyone can become a franchisee. In practice, not everyone is suited to the role. The people who thrive tend to be entrepreneurial individuals who are willing to personally commit to the venture in order to achieve the best possible results. Creativity and the ability to build strong relationships – with both customers and their own team – are also skills that can make or break a business.
Interestingly, prior industry experience is far less important than you might expect. Among the people who have built locations within the Xtreme Fitness Gyms network, you’ll find individuals who previously worked in healthcare, finance, construction, the FMCG sector, and many others.
